Jurgen Johnson is Claimed by Death
Old Resident of County Passes Away at Home in LeMars Sunday

Another pioneer of this county was called away last Sunday at his home in LeMars when Jurgen Albers Johnson, father of the Johnson family of Remsen, passed away after a brief illness of about 10 days. He was 87 years old. His death was due to lung trouble which resulted from a cold.

Mr Johnson was known as one of the most robust men of his age in the county, but when he exposed himself to wet weather recently he contracted a cold which quickly settled into lung trouble and his age prevented him from withstanding the ravages of sickness. He sank quickly despite the best of care on the part of physicians and his family members, and passed away at five o'clock Sunday morning, June 16.

Jurgen Albers Johnson was born Sept. 23, 1848, at Nauscho [Neuschoo], Germany, and came to the United Stated in the year 1865. On Feb 2, 1871, he was united in marriage to Catherine Marie Luetgens [Luitjens], who preceded him in death Sept, 26, 1933, due to a fracture of the hip which she suffered in a fall.

Following his marriage the Johnsons settled at Eureka, Ill., where they engaged in farming for 17 years. They then came to Plymouth county where they settled near Remsen, and took up farming. In 1904 they moved to the city of LeMars, and have resided on Third Avenue S.E. to this time.

He leaves to mourn his loss, seven sons and two daughters, John A. Johnson, Harm, Joergen, Henry and Enoch of Remsen; Alt Johnson of Madison, S.D.; George Johnson of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mrs Etta Backer of Pipestone, Minn., and Mrs Anna Heldt of Wentworth, S.D. Thirty-two grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren also survive. One son, Bernard, passed away Sept. 11, 1888.
