Louisa Engel was the oldest child of Fred Engel and Maria Schuhknecht. She was born on the ship, "Elbe," three days before it arrived in New York, NY on 19 Dec. 1862. Her parents were from Mecklenburg, Germany. They emigrated to the U.S.A. and settled in Wisconsin where they first farmed in Newton, Manitowoc Co., WI, and later in Grover Twp., Marinette Co., WI, near the village of Peshtigo.
On 23 Apr. 1879, Louisa Engel was married to Charles Krayer in Marinette, WI. He was born in Hessen, Germany, in 1850 and came to the U.S. prior to 1879. His occupation was saloon keeper.
Louisa and Charles Krayer had seven children, all born in Marinette, WI, and baptized at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church there. Charles died 19 Dec. 1893, and is buried at Calvary Cemetery, Marinette, WI.
In 1908, Louisa Engel Krayer married August Luedtke and they made their home at Seven Mile Creek, Juneau Co., WI. After August died in 1919, Louisa lived with her daughter, Mary Krayer Thyne, for several years before coming to Reedsburg, WI, to spend her last years with her daughter, Anna C. Krayer Wagner.
When Louisa died in 1931, she was survived by four children, Mary Thyne, Alfred Krayer, Joseph Krayer, Anna Wagner; 17 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren; brothers, Fred and Paul Engel; sisters, Margaret Feske, Marie Christiansen, Sophia Kasten. She was preceeded in death by husbands,Charles Krayer and August Leudtke; children: Louisa Krayer, William Krayer and Edith Krayer Krummel; her parents; siblings, John, Rudolph, William and Charles Engel.
