Melvin "Gene" Wathan, 75, of Xenia, IL died at 4:10 PM Monday, February 18, 2008 at his home in Xenia.

He was born July 8, 1932 in Clay County, IL to Tiny Chris & Mamie (Stoops) Wathan. He married Dena Oulrey on March 21, 1953 in Xenia, IL.

Gene was a retired truck driver, a U.S. Army veteran, and his memberships included Xenia Christian Church, Flora VFW Post #3999 and Flora American Legion Post #14.

He is survived by his wife: Dena Wathan of Xenia; son: David Wathan & wife Betty of Flora; daughter: Barbara Cantrell & husband Walter of Plano; 4 grandchildren: Matt Cantrell & wife Danielle of Round Lake Beach, Joshua Wathan of Flora, Deanna Cantrell of Aurora and Michael Cantrell of Plano; 3 step-grandchildren: Sam Dulaney, Vicki Campos & Jesse Campos; 1 great-grandson: Brendon Wathan; 6 step-great-grandchildren: Nathan Dulaney, Hannah Dulaney, Dakota Cartwright, John Cartwright, Summer Cartwright and Peyton Campos; 2 brothers: Jack Wathan & wife Doris of Flora and Harold Wathan & wife Alice of Decatur; 2 sisters-in-law: Wanda Wathan of Flora and Pat Wathan of Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 1 step-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Saturday, February 23, 2008 at Frank & Bright Funeral Home. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Xenia with military honors. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Clay County Hospice and may be received at the funeral home.
