The origin of the Rake cemetery is unknown. I received the following information from Millie Covey Fry via e-mail stating: "I visited the Rake Cemetery (formerly the Snodgrass farm and cemetery) on SR26 in Lawrence Township this morning with George Rake. He mentioned that a close relative has researched the Rake Family. Contact George at 740/473-2215. He mentioned this morning that the Rake family was from Germany and was in Washington County in the early 1800s. My ancestor was Hiram Snodgrass and his daughter, Sarah, married Elijah Rake. Eventually the Snodgrass cemetery was renamed."

Many years ago, an elderly woman in Parkersburg, WV (Mrs. Idell Snodgrass) told me that Sarah (Snodgrass) and Elijah Rake cared for her parents when they were old. Her father Hiram Snodgrass died in 1879. Following his death, her mother (Druzilla Oliver Snodgrass) went to Ritchie Co., WV with their son, David Snodgrass. Sounds like Sarah and Elijah received part of the Snodgrass farm for their care and someone later changed the name of the cemetery to the Rake Cemetery. I have heard that a hutch owned by Druzilla and Hiram Snodgrass remains in the Rake family but I have never seen it.

Hiram's sister, Margaret Snodgrass, died in 1824 at the age of 21 years and was the first person buried on her brother's farm - not far from the family home. About seven months ago, I published a book on Charles Snodgrass (died in 1808 outside of Fairmont, WV) and two wives and his 12 children. Five of the children (Eli, Beniah, Hiram, Margaret and Joseph) came to Lawrence Twp., Washington County, OH in 1812 with their mother Barbara Foulk Snodgrass. I was at the Rake Cemetery this morning to meet with the owner of the Ohio Valley Monument Company. I am having him set a small marker in front of Margaret's stone because you can read most of it today; repair two Snodgrass stones, and set a stone for David Taylor (died in 1842). Mr. Hadley remembers seeing the Taylor stone on a bank on Fifteen Creek Road at SR 26 in the early 1900s. Several years ago, it was found on the Walter Hoff farm and I retreived it from the present owner a couple of years ago.
