JAMES CAMPBELL JOWELL
James Campbell Jowell was born May 10, 1842 in Marion County, Alabama, and died at Tulia, Texas August 22,1928 at the ripe old age of 86 years. When he was three years old he came with his parents to East Texas, where he grew to young manhood and was married in 1867 to Miss Mary Jane Mason, who survives him. To this union there were born seven children, one of which died in infancy. Four boys, William E., Jason H., Gideon and Mal H.. and two girls, Mrs. Ollie P. Settle, and Mrs. Tennie Scott, still survive.
Mr. Jowell joined the Baptist Church in Palo Pinto County in 1876 or 1877 and after the family moved to Swisher County in 1890, immediately after the organization of the Baptist Church at Tulia, he transferred his membership here, where it remained until his death.
He has helped to develop this county and was one of the most highly respected citizens. He has seen many hardships, but was always ready to meet them and usually came out victorious.
Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church last Thursday, August 23, by the pastor, Rev. A. C. Huff, after which interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery.
