Served in the United States Army during the Spanish-American War as a member of Theodore Roosevelt's "Rough Riders", and as a Major during World War I. In 1936 he was the Vice-Presidential Candidate on the Republican Ticket, running with Governor Alf Landon (and being defeated by incumbent President Franklin D. Roosevelt).
