William Edwin York, 83, of Huntsville, died July 8, 1999. He was the son of the late William and Ella Jeffers York. In addition to his parents, he was preceded also in death by his father and mother-in-law, Manford and Wilda Baker Sexton; one granddaughter, Susan Yarbrough Legg; and one son-in-law, Robert Clendon (Bob) Blakeley. He was a faithful member of the Huntsville Presbyterian Church and served as an elder and treasurer. He was a graduate of Huntsville High School and Draughn's Business College, and attended Lincoln Memorial University and Maryville College. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was assigned to the 803rd Company "B" Engineer Aviation Battalion and stationed in the Philippine Islands where later he became a prisoner of War. During World War II, he was among 60,000 prisoners forced to march in the "Bataan Death March". He was elected and served four terms as Scott County Trustee, worked for 11 years as a loan officer at First National Bank of Oneida, served as Huntsville Postmaster for 25 years until his retirement at age 74, was a member of American Legion Post #136, member and treasurer of the Disabled American Veterans' Chapter #91, and was instrumental in the establishment of the Scott County Veterans' Memorial Monument. He is survived by his wife, Wilda Theora Sexton York of Huntsville; five children: Ellen Ruth Rash and husband, The Rev. Doctor Earl Rash of Tryon, N.C., Linda Lou Yarbrough and husband, John of Knoxville, Billie Jean Blakeley of Winfield, Sarah Ann Randolph and husband Mark, and William Andrew York and wife, Leah, both of Knoxville; 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and many other relatives. Funeral service was conducted July 10, 1999, at the Presbyterian Church with Rev. Martha Anne Fairchild, Rev. Thomas M.L. Wade, and The Rev. Doctor Earl M. Rash officiating. Interment followed in Mossip Cemetery with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post #136. Four Oaks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
