Melinda/Malinda Helen/Hellen Jones was the daughter of Elizabeth Daniel Clements and Wesley Thomas Jones. She married Martin Van Buren Branch on the evening of 7 January 1864 near Holly Springs, J. A. Norris, Esq., presiding. Her husband soon died, leaving her with a very small baby daughter, a year's worth of food, and a place to live. She and the baby lived in her father's and mother's home for a time. Her husband's family considered that a good way to take care of her would be to have her marry her husband's nephew, William Archibald "Archie" Branch, who was, in fact, fairly close to her in age. They had three children, Kate, Andrew and Sarah. Texanna, when she came of age, saw fit to take the land and house, which she was entitled to, by law, as the only blood descendant of her father, and she had decided to marry Joseph Walter Collins after they spotted each other across the room at choir practice. Malinda, had had the right to work 1/3 of the land and keep the produce from that 1/3, "the window's dower," had lost her rights to that by re-marrying. However, she had managed very well and had cared for Texanna. She was a resourceful woman. Unfortunately, however, she died when her youngest child, a daughter, was only ten years old. It seems that the lives of her three children with Archie did not go really well. Texanna prospered, but had a rather stressful life, losing her husband (to flu/pneumonia) when her youngest child was only four years old. She did remarry and raise her four children and two stepchildren.
