Gunther Carl Bengston

Gunther was born August 28, 1947 in Karlshure Germany to Norman and Elisabeth Bengston. He was the eldest of 4 children, Randy, Janet and Brian. When Gunther was a year old they moved to Rock Island, IL where they lived for 8 years, then moved to Omaha, NE where he grew up and graduated from North High School.

In 1966 Gunther made the decision to enlist in the United States Army serving in the Vietnam War. Gunther was a member of the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP), 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. LRRP's worked in 6 man teams which were inserted behind enemy lines with the main objective to gather intel on large scale enemy forces, set up air strikes, conduct raids also prisoner snatches under the direct command of a General officer. Gunther worked his way up from being an RTO (radio/telephone operator) to a Senior Scout position and was being groomed to be a team leader with the LRRPs at the time he was severely wounded by machine gun fire on 1 November 1967. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Due to the severity of his wounds he was treated and transferred to Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver CO where he spent a year and a half in rehabilitation learning to read, write and walk again. During his recovery at Fitzsimons his faith sustained him and he never allowed his injuries to hinder or defeat him from living a full life.

Gunther later attended college at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and graduated with a Bachelors Degree. He worked as a property manager in Cedar Falls, IA and Omaha, NE. In 1980 he began working for the United States Postal Service in Lincoln, NE where he completed 30 years of employment retiring in 2009.

Anyone that knew Gunther knows that he lived with a strong faith, had a unique sense of humor, was a very loyal man with a great love for his family, his country and his Army Brothers.
