John Hawkins brought his family over the Oregon Trail 1852 (census 1853 Washington Co., Oregon Territory, pg. #30); In 1855 he was Surveyor of Rainier precinct, Columbia Co., Oregon Territory. He helped establish the Ranier Seminary for Education ; 1 Dec 1854 settled in the town of Rainier, Columbia Co.,. His occupation was 'piano maker' in 1850 and that is why he was working at the Opera House in Salem. He was on Tax List 1854, Columbia County.;
On Sunday evening the 28th inst. at 9 o'clock, at his home in the city, after a protracted illness of many months, John S. Hawkins, aged 73 years. The funeral will take place Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the residence, corner Marion and 14h streets, SW. The intement at I. O. O. F. cemetery. His friends and acquaintances are invited to attend.
