James Daniel Houghton

son of:
William Lake Houghton 1809-1877
Lettice Carolyn Hargrave 1821-1882

husband of:
Nancy Elizabeth Hastings 1838-1871

children:
Frances Floretta 1856-1946
Lake William 1858-1938
Alonzo Osmond 1860-1952
Florence Mae 1864-1948
Mary Ann 1868-1885

I have just been contacted by a distant cousin (Cindy B.) with this information: The Houghton family left Sulfur Springs on Dec. 2, 1867 and headed SW (due to poor economic conditions). The weather got bad and James D. got sick while driving the oxen. They stopped at a family's ranch in Navarro County, near Waco Texas. They stayed with this family, the Ritchies (I have found that their house was a common stop). James D. developed pneumonia and died on Dec. 24, 1867. He was buried in the Ritchies' family plot. (He only has a marker at the Little Lake Cemetary, and is not buried there)

Gravesite Details

This marker is a cenotaph. He is buried on a ranch in Texas but the family included him on the monument.
