Journalist, Statesman. He graduated at the head of his class from Dartmouth College in 1811, was a tutor, journalist and was personal friend of President Andrew Jackson. Following Jackson's election in 1829, he went to Washington, D.C., became fourth Auditor of the Treasury and was the President's intimate adviser. He proved an able administrator and became Postmaster General in 1834, holding office until 1840. As Jackson's assistant, he wrote most of the President's annual addresses and produced much of the newspaper material that appeared throughout the country to build support for Jackson's programs. In 1862, he helped found the Calvary Baptist Church and established Gallaudet University in 1864, the first higher education institution for students who are the deaf. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
