Death: Jun. 20, 1888

Painter. Maine-born artist who specialized in marine and landscape paintings. Stanwood was adopted by Captain Gideon Stanwood and his wife Elizabeth. As a boy, he frequently accompanied his father on sea voyages around the world and developed a life-long love of the sea and sailing ships. After completing his education and a short stint as a mariner, he opened an art studio in Portland, Maine. His work is noted for its detailed realism and tight linear style. He is considered a member of the White Mountain School of Art. In 1882 he became one of the early members of the Portland School of Art. Today Stanwood's paintings hang in museums such as the Toronto Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Portland Museum of Art.  (bio by: Dech)
