Jasper John Alford, known commonly as "Jap" Alford was the son of John and Clarissa Davenport Alford. He was born in Mer Rouge, Louisiana where he spent most of his life. As a very young man Jap fathered Ada Alford, the daughter of Henrietta Clay. Ada was born in 1872 in Mer Rouge and died in Pueblo, Colorado on May 5, 1936. Ada and John have many descendants, most became acquinted with their Mer Rouge family and the Mer Rouge area in recent years. John Levy, Ada's husband, died in Homer, Louisiana in 1904. Jap enjoyed a life long relationship with Annette Sevall and together they raised a large and productive family. Their descendants are scattered across the United States. Jap was one of the few men who lived unapologetically and openly with his black family. At his death, "Nett" and their children had to relinquish his remains to his relatives and he is buried in their midst.
