Widow of Fifth Governor of Oregon Dies at Winlock, Wash.
Husband Came to Oregon in 1831 and Marriage Took Place in 1856.
Washington Supreme Court Justice is Son.
Mrs. Jane Ann Chadwick, a pioneer Salem woman, widow of Stephen F. Chadwick, fifth governor of Oregon, died suddenly at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Claire Chadwick Maury, yesterday morning at 3 o'clock at Winlock, Washington. She was 81 years old. The funeral will be held here Saturday at 2:30 o'clock from St. Paul's Episcopal church. Rev. Robert S. Gill will officiate and burial will be in Odd Fellows cemetery. Mrs. Chadwick left Salem December 23 last to visit relatives in Washington. She has been the guest of her son, Judge Stephen C. Chadwick, of the supreme court of Washington, who lives at Olympia, and also a daughter, Mrs. William Gray of Seattle. Mrs. Chadwick left Seattle Monday to visit at Winlock. She was taken ill Tuesday night and did not rally. Her family was with her until the end including a daughter, Miss Mary Chadwick of Salem, and a son, Pitzer Chadwick of Colfax, Washington. Mrs. Gray and Miss Mary Chadwick arrived in Salem last night. Known as Lodge Worker. Chadwick chapter, Order of Eastern Star of Salem, of which Mrs. Chadwick was a prominent member, took its name from the Chadwick family twenty years ago. Governor Chadwick was a distinguished member of the Masonic order, having attained the thirty-third degree in the Scottish c rite of the order, was seven times master of a lodge, and grand master in the Lodge of Perfection. He also received marked distinction as an Odd Fellow. Born in Covington, Virginia, December 9, 1835, as Jane Ann Smith, Mrs. Chadwick was a popular Virginia belle. She came to Oregon with her parents in 1853, settling at the family homestead near Yoncalla, in Douglas county. She was married in 1856 to Stephen F. Chadwick. With two sons and two daughters, Etta, Stephen, Mary and Pitzer Chadwick, the family moved to Salem From Roseburg in 1871. Husband Early Pioneer.
Stephen F. Chadwick, the fifth governor of Oregon was born in Connecticut, December 25, 1825. He studied law, and was admitted to the bar in the state of New York in 1850, starting for the state of Oregon immediately after being admitted. He came by way of California, arriving in the Umpqua Valley in 1851, when he immediately entered upon the practice of his profession as an attorney. He was elected first county judge of what is now Douglas county, and was the first postmaster at Scottsburg on the Umpqua river. He was deputy United States prosecuting attorney for souther Oregon, and was elected a member of the constitutional convention for the formation of the state constitution of Oregon. He was successively elected presidential elector in 1864 and 1868, and at the election in 1870 was honored with the position of secretary of state. He was re-elected in 1874.
