Birth: May 13, 1917
Presho
Lyman County
South Dakota, USA
Death: Jan. 25, 2006
Iowa, USA

Lawrence C Ambur, 88, departed this world to meet his maker on January 25, 2006, at Villa del Sol Nursing Home in Marshaltown, Iowa, following several years struggling with the ravages of stroke.
Funeral services were Monday, January 30, 2006 at Presho American Lutheran Church.
Born to Archie and Ingeborg Ambur on May 13, 1917, seventeen miles southwest of Presho, South Dakota, Lawrence farmed and ranched on the homestead of his maternal grandparents for forty years before retiring and turning over operation of the farm to his son and grandson.
Together with his first wife, Alpha Olson, whom he married in 1947, he fathered four children, and by marriage to his second wife, Catherine (Kay) Dice Flynn in 1976, he acquired six more grown stepchildren.
Besides farming and breeding registered Hereford cattle, Lawrence enjoyed visiting with family and friends; bowling, golfing, drinking coffee and joking with his local buddies; as well as traveling the world and making new friends withe his wife Kay. He visited all 50 states and many countries. Known as "Larry" only by his traveling companions, among his most cherished trips was a people-to-people tour of Russia when it was still part of the Soviet Union. For many years thereafter couples from the tour would gather for reunions at the State Fair. Another highlight was a tour of Norway, and ancestral homeland with his children in celebration of his 80th birthday.
Lawrence served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and was a charter member of the Lions Club, president of the Big Bend Hereford Association, and co-founder and co-leader of the Prairie Eagles 4-H Club. He was also a faithful member of the Presho Evangelical Lutheran men's chorus and quartet.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his first wife, Alpha, an infant daughter, son Loren and stepson John Flynn.
He is survived by his wife Kay of Presho; brothers Arvid (Arlene) Ambur of Presho and Woodrow of Portland, OR; sisters Fern (Ernie) West of Encino, CA, and Blanche Archer of Pierre, SD; his son Owen (Diane) Ambur of Silver Spring, MD; daughters Susan (Joe) Weaver of Marshaltown, IA, and Sonja (Russ) Ambur-Hartley of Olathe, KS; daughter-in-law Linda Ambur of Presho; stepsons Alan Rice and Dan Flynn; stepdaughters Helen Rice Bode, Patricia Flynn and Dorothy Flynn Head; twenty four grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
He was an honest, diligent, and hard working member of the community who believed in contributing more than he received. He was also a good and reliable friend, and a devoted husband and father. Lawrence was well loved and will be remembered with fondness.
