Olympic Champion. As a Russian light middleweight boxer he distinguished himself by winning 3 Olympic metal. His first was a bronze that he won at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. His second and third were gold medals that he won at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Mexico. He also won a gold medal at the 1961 and 1963 European Amateur Championships games in Belgrade, Yugoslavia and Moscow, Soviet Union. In his career he won 242 matches and lost 11.
