US Vice President. Educated at Shoreham Academy, he taught school in Boscawen, New Hampshire, (1840-41). In 1878, he was appointed honorary commissioner to the Paris Exhibition by President Rutherford Hayes. In 1879, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses and served until his resignation, when appointed US Minister to France, serving (1881-85). He was elected Vice President of the United States on the Republican ticket with Benjamin Harrison and served 1881-93. After his term, he served as the Governor of New York (1895-97) and later was an investor in real estate until his death at age 96. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
