CHATSWORTH -- Herbert "Herb" G. Knoll, 84, of rural Chatsworth died at 7 a.m. Sunday (Dec. 21, 2003) at his home after a long illness.
Rev. Gretchen Stinebaugh officiating. Burial will be in Chatsworth Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post 613. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Masonic rites at 6:45 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Pontiac hospice.
He was born Oct. 8, 1919, in Secor, a son of Frank and Emma Bruns Knoll. He married Mary L. Weber on Dec. 27, 1969. She survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Dixie J. (Richard) Haberkorn, Chatsworth; two sons, Ronald (Mary Ann) Knoll, Pontiac; and James Knoll of Florida; one stepson, Nelson (Lea) Weber, Des Moines, Iowa; one stepdaughter, Vickie (Randy) Mundschenk, Graymont; three grandchildren, Scott Haberkorn; Kim Monical and Kathy Walsberg; eight stepgrandchildren, Leonard Weber; David Weber; William Weber; Tammy Page; Peggy Swallow, Julie Brooks, Tony Weber; and Nicole Weber; four great-granchildren; and 12 stepgreat-granchildren.
He was of the Methodist faith and was a retired farmer.
He was an auditor and on the township board for Charlotte Township. He was a member of Forrest American Legion 613; the Mason Chatsworth Lodge 539 and Bloomington Consistory; a charter member of Elks Lodge 2661; Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fairbury Post 9789; and the World War II memorial committee.
He was in the Army, serving in World War II. He received the overseas service bar; the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater ribbon with one bronze battle star; the good conduct medal and the World War II victory medal. He attended West Point after his service.
He was educated at Chatsworth grade and high school. He attended University of Illinois.
He enjoyed bowling, fishing and spending winters at his winter home in Lake Placid, Fla.
