Obituary from eckersellfuneralhome.com:
Edward Milton Lewis, age 90, of Rexburg, passed away peacefully August 20, 2022 at his home. Having struggled with normal age related ailments the last several years of his life, he never lost his wit, keen mind, or sense of humor and went out of this life as he wanted to. Having enjoyed a well-attended family reunion the prior weekend at Seeley Lake, Montana, he passed away quickly and in his own home a few days later.
Ed was born October 24, 1931 in Seattle Washington to John Daniel Lewis of Minnesota and Marie Newman of Germany. He grew up in the Seattle area and, after a short stint in the Navy, worked several jobs including as a postal worker, time with Boeing, and as a forest ranger in Yellowstone.
Ed married Ruth Putman in 1961. They later divorced, but not before having two daughters, Rae Johnson and Robin Pena, and two sons, Jeremy Lewis and Darren Lewis. They raised their family in Helena, Montana and, to their credit, even after the divorce remained amicable and put aside their differences during years of family gatherings, holiday dinners, and camping trips so the kids never had to "split" their time between them.
Ed graduated from college from Eastern Washington University in 1968 and earned his teaching degree. Having found a profession he was passionate about shortly after graduation he accepted a position with the school district in Helena Montana where he continued to work as an elementary school teacher until his retirement in 1993. He also taught drivers education in the summers for years which gave him a chance to display his patience and nerve on a consistent basis.
Ed was an avid outdoorsman throughout his life and loved to hunt, fish, and camp. He passed his love of the outdoors to his kids. He was also a long- time golfer who loved to play the game. After his retirement he was able to travel to many far-flung places including New Zealand, Australia, Spain, and the southern states in search of a beautiful golf course to enjoy. He taught the game to his sons and this became a frequent way they spent time together. He also learned to fly in his retirement years and got his pilot's license. Ed was known to be quite a chef and found a way to use almost every expired item in the fridge to create terrific spaghetti sauce, beef stew, and other meals. His bacon waffles were a family favorite, but unfortunately he never wrote a recipe down as everything was made without measuring cups or teaspoons.
As a school teacher Ed loved to read and learn. He constantly amazed his children and grandchildren with his knowledge of various subjects and we frequently said he should have played in the game show Jeopardy. Whether it was his knowledge in identifying birds, ducks, flowers, and trees or his memory for history he continued to learn and read until the end of his life.
Ed is survived by his two daughters, Rae Johnson (Jim Smith) of Oklahoma, and Robin Pena (Greg Pata) of Spokane Washington, and his two sons, Jeremy (Gae) Lewis of Newport, Washington, and Darren (Kara) Lewis of Ririe Idaho. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his five siblings: Ethel Amundson, Virginia Andersen, John Lewis, Mason Lewis, and Hugh Dwight Lewis. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Bonnie Lewis.
The family will visit with friends at a viewing at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 27, 2022 at the Eckersell Funeral Home in Rigby, Idaho. The funeral services will immediately follow at 11 a.m. Following the funeral services the interment will be at the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery.
