GOSPORT — Col. Robert Earl Rockwell, 84, passed away at Morgan County Hospital on Sunday evening, January 27, 2008.
He was born to Laura (Roudebush) Rockwell and Earl Rockwell on April 12, 1923, in Blooming Valley, PA. Growing up on various dairy farms in northwest Pennsylvania, he graduated from Wattsburg High School in 1941. Robert was brother to Betty Burlingham and Roger (Gloria) Rockwell, both of Union City, PA, and Raymond, deceased, (Lois) Rockwell of Plains, GA. He attended and graduated from Baptist Bible Seminary in Johnson City, NY; Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL; Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, and Columbia University in New York City. He was ordained as a minister of the gospel in Rochester, NY, in 1950. Robert was married to Betty Brownell of Rochester, NY, on August 21, 1945. Three children were born to their union; Steven (Jane) Rockwell of North Little Rock, AR, Steven's son Neil from Guinea, Africa; Suzanne (Robert) Miller and their children Matthew with daughter Lark; Jeremy, and Drew from San Pedro, CA.; Thomas (Sharon) Rockwell of Indianapolis, with daughter, Samantha. Thomas's daughter Nicole (Tyrone) Shelton from Fishers and his son Tavis from Louisville, KY.
Robert was proud of his career in the U.S. Army as a military chaplain for thirty years. He began his service in the infantry in Germany at the end of WWII during 1945-46, then returning to school in order to become a battalion chaplain while serving during the Korean conflict in 1952-53. He became the senior command chaplain in Vietnam, Berlin, and post chaplain in Massachusetts. While serving as instructor and staff officer of the U.S. Army Chaplain School he influenced many chaplains preparing for ministry during the Vietnam War. Chaplain Rockwell always felt that his most effective ministry was "Bringing God to men and men to God" while command chaplain of the 1st Aviation Brigade in Vietnam in 1969-1970. He also achieved rank of Colonel while in Berlin, Germany, from 1970-1973.
After retiring from the U.S. Army, Chaplain Rockwell was pastor for several churches in Indiana. Robert and Betty's ministry continued in their hosting the retreat center known as The Gathering Place, Inc. in Gosport, Indiana, for sixteen years.
Thankful to the Lord for every opportunity of Christian service, his greatest pleasure has been that of being a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Funeral services will be held at Chandler-Whitaker Funeral Home in Gosport on Friday, February 1, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Friendship Park Cemetery with military honors by the Spencer and Gosport VFW Honor Guard.
