Born in Montgomery, Pennsylvania, USA, he was a son of John and Annie Shuman and was a stepson of Pauline Shuman.
A 1936 graduate of Bloomsburg High School, his undergraduate and graduate work were taken at Wayne State University. An excellent trombonist and singer, he travelled for several years in the 1940s with various big band groups. After leaving the group, he taught instrumental music for 34 years and continued playing music with several other bands and orchestras.
He was an active member of his church choir, played the string bass in the Bloomsburg University Symphony Orchestra, played in the Catawissa Military Band, and sang in the Bloomsburg Bicentennial Chorus.
A member of the board of directors of the Bloomsburg Town Park Improvement Association, he was involved in building the band shell and scheduling the summer band concerts there. For many years he was responsible for planting the many beautiful flowers that graced the park. He was a longtime member of the Bloomsburg Fair Association and had also been involved with music productions at the Michigan State Fair.
He was an active member of the Masonic Order, the Consistory, the Eastern Star, and the Shiners, with whom he played the trombone for many years in a marching band.
He served as a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army Air Force in WWII.
