A native of Lansford, Pennsylvania, he achieved All-American status during his collegiate years at Boston College and was a key member of the Eagles team that defeated Tennessee in the 1941 Sugar Bowl. After serving in the United States Navy during World War II, Holovak played at the fullback position for three seasons (1946 to 1948) in the National Football League, with the Los Angeles Rams and Chicago Bears. In 34 NFL games, he rushed for 720 yards with 6 touchdowns. After retiring as a player, he coached for nine seasons (1961 to 1968, 1976) in the American and National Football Leagues with the Boston Patriots and New York Jets, compiling a record of 52 wins 47 losses and 9 ties. He also served as longtime general manager of the Houston Oilers. Holovak was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1985. He died from pneumonia. (bio by: C.S.)
