Recipient of Sacrifice Medal (posthumous)
Corporal, 5th Combat Engineer Regiment based in Valcartier, Québec. Aged 21, he was from Saint-Georges, QC and deployed in July 2007 to serve with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
He was killed and two soldiers wounded when their light armoured vehicle hit a roadside bomb about 35 kilometres southwest of Kandahar City in Panjwaii district. They were part of a team of sappers clearing mines from a road ahead of a convoy.
Cpl. Gonthier was remembered as a big-hearted man who was always in good spirits. He joined the military in 2004 and was on his first foreign mission. Although he received a promotion from Sapper in December, he never had the chance to wear his rank in the field. He is survived by his parents Bernard Gonthier (Gaétanne Roy) and France Poulin (Paul Fortin), sister Catherine Gonthier, grandparents Armand & Rita Gonthier and Germain & Solange Poulin, his girlfriend Cinthia Morin and other relatives.
He is the 78th soldier, along with a diplomat, to die since Canada first sent troops to Afghanistan in 2002.
Military funeral held on February 2, 2008 at Saint-Georges Church.
