For nine seasons (1948 to 1956), he played at the fullback, halfback and defensive back positions in the National Football League with the Philadelphia Eagles. Born James Richard Parmer, he was raised in Oklahoma where he attended Mangum High School. He played collegiate football at Texas A&M and later transferred to Oklahoma State University, where he was a member of the 1945 Cowboys' squad which clinched the Sugar Bowl title. Selected by the Eagles during the 23rd round of the 1948 NFL Draft, he appeared in 88 career regular season games, recording 1,636 rushing yards with 20 touchdowns. He experienced back-to-back world championships (1948 and 1949) with Philadelphia; he recorded 41 rushing yards during the 1949 NFL Title game. Following his playing career, Parmer served as an assistant coach at Texas Tech University and was a longtime scout with the Chicago Bears. (bio by: C.S.)
