Theodore Earnest Stearns was born the third child of Theodore Frelinghuysen Stearns (1844-1930) and Anna Eliza Backer (1854-1919).

On the 25 July 1910, Theodore married Mary Ida Alexander (1892-1981) in Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co., California. Between 1911 and 1926, Theodore and Mary had five children: Helen, Elsie, Dora, Carol, and Theodore.

At some point following the birth of their last child, Theodore and Mary's marriage ended in divorce. On the 19 September 1941, he married Naomi Floyd (1907-1992) in Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai, Idaho.

Throughout much of his life, Theodore was employed as a Longshoreman in the Portland area. In about 1960, after retiring, he and Naomi moved to Arizona and settled in Mesa. There, Theodore died from kidney failure.
