John McHale
Birth: Sep. 21, 1921
Death: Jan. 17, 2008

Major League Baseball Player, Executive. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he was a first baseman for five seasons (1943 to 1945, 1947 to 1948) with the Detroit Tigers. After attending the University of Notre Dame, McHale made his big league debut on May 28, 1943. His career highlight came as a member of the 1945 World Champion Tigers, appearing in three games during the World Series. In 64 career regular season games, McHale had 22 hits with a .193 lifetime batting average. After retiring as a player, he held various front office positions with the Tiger and Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves organizations. He served as team president and later general manager of the Montreal Expos from 1969 to 1986. He died of complications from a stroke. (bio by: C.S.)
