Born Near Leesburg Seventy-Two Years Ago But For Past Thirty-Years Has Lived In Winchester
After an illness extending over four weeks, J. Bradshaw Beverley, father of Mrs. Harry F. Byrd, succumbed at his home in Winchester on Sunday night. Near relatives were at his bedside when the end came. Funeral services were held at four o'clock Tuesday afternoon in Christ Episcopal Church at Winchester, Rev. R.B. Nelson officiating.
Mr. Beverley, who for the last ten years served as clerk of the corporation court at Winchester, was a native of Loudoun county, having been born at 'Selma' near Leesburg, in 1854. He was educated in private schools and graduated from Virginia Military Institute.
Capt Beverley lived at Selma, the ancestral estate of his family, until 1890 when he sold this estate of more that fifteen hundred acres to Thomas Swann, grandson of Governor Swann, of Maryland, who in turn sold the property to its present owner, Colonel E.B. White. Captain Beverley was born May 13, 1854, at Selma. This estate was devised by the will of his uncle, William Beverley the First to Captain Beverly's father, William Beverley, the Second. Adjoining Selma was another large estate in Loudoun County known as Locust Hill. On this estate at Locust Hill lived Miss Frances Westwood Gray and she it was who became the bride of Captain Beverley's father and was the mother of Captain Beverley himself.
Captain Beverley, therefore, was a third cousin of Annie Douglass Gray, of Leesburg, Virginia, whom he married. He married Miss Annie Douglas Gray, daughter of Robert Waterman Gray and Mary Elizabeth Gray forty-six years ago in Leesburg. All the children of this union were born in Leesburg, except William Avenel Beverley, who was born in Winchester. Of the six children, Robert Douglas Beverley, Frances Westwood Beverley and William Avenel Beverly are dead.
