CAPTAIN GEORGE BARRELL, Springfield, Illinois; was born in York county, Maine, April 21, 1809, son of George and Caroline Low Barrell. His father was a merchant, also Consul to Spain for a number of years; failing in health, he went to Barcelona, where he died. George was educated in Plymouth county, Massachusetts, and at the age of fourteen went to sea, which he followed thirty years; was in the fore-castle a number of years; the last eighteen years, he was in command; his trade called him to all parts of the world.
In August, 1855, he came to Springfield, where he has resided ever since. In January, 1839, he married Miss Anna Douglas, daughter of William W. Douglas, of Scotch descent; she was born in Connecticut, in 1821. They had seven children, five of whom are living: S. Francis Georgiana, now Mrs. Clinton M. Conkling; Carrie M., Nellie D., now Mrs. Joseph N. Died, Saturday morning, Jan. 13, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. J. N. Carter in Quincy, Captain George Barrell, in his eighty-fifth year. Captain Barrell resided in this city until recently since 1856. For the last year or two he had resided with his daughter in Quincy. His wife died last September. He left the following children: Mrs. C. L. Conkling of this city, Mrs. J. G. Jennings of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Frank Barrell of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. J. N. Carter of Quincy and Charles E. Barrell of Denison, Texas.
For some years he was captain of a merchant vessel between this country and England and was also in the East India trade. A few years before the war he engaged in business in this city with Simeon Francis. He afterwards was in the revenue department and after that for some years in the life insurance business. For some years past he had not been in any active business.
The funeral will take place Monday afternoon from the residence of Mr. Clinton L. Conkling, 802 South Second street in this city. IL State Journal, Springfield, IL 1-14-1894
