According to US Army casualty listings he was Killed In Action (KIA). I have looked at the WWII Rosters of the Dead, burial file for him at Ancestry and he was temporarily buried at a cemetery in Florence, Italy until the repatriation began around 1948. This tells me that he died somewhere in the European Theater.
