James was one of 7 children born to Thomas & Catherine Gatherum in Fife, Scotland. He was raised there.
He married Mary Watson on Sept. 3, 1857 in Largo, Fife Scotland. They had 11 children. The family immigrated in 1882 from Liverpool to NY. They made their way to Provo.
Mary died in 1894. Sadly, three of their boys (James Jr., William, and Thomas we killed in the Scofield Mine disaster in May, 1900.
James passed away in 1909 from capillary bronchitis at age 76. He is buried in Provo with Mary.
