Rites Thursday for Glenwood Resident
Funeral services for Mrs. Sophia Toney Byrd, 79 wife of Arthur Byrd of Glenwood will be held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock in the Pilgrim Holiness Church at Frankfort. She died at her home in Glenwood, Monday afternoon.
She had resided at her home in Glenwood for the last three years and Pryor to that in Columbia Township, Fayette County. Besides the husband, she leaves six children, Mrs. Willis Pettay of Florida, Mrs. William Schlechtweg of Glenwood, Mrs. Opal Smith, and Phillip Toney of Frankfort, Mrs. Mary Kidwell of Indianapolis and Jesse Toney of Connersville. 25 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren.
Dad said his mother Mrs. William (Flora) Schlechtweg took care of Sophia at Flora's house and was living with William and Flora Schlechtweg along with their children.
Sophia Ashcraft died in Glenwood, Fayette County, Indiana, the county line ran through their farm it is on the Rush/Fayette County line. she married 14 Jul 1891 Oliver Cromwell Toney. Great grandma Sophia Ashcraft Toney was married four times. First to Joseph F. Davis on 30 Oct 1886 Shelby County, Indiana. Sophia and Joseph had a daughter Rhesa (Ressie) Mae Davis, who married Charles Cleveland Mark, Sophia married 2nd to Oliver Cromwell Toney, third to Ralph John Burgdoerfer on 27 Jun 1932 Fayette County, Indiana, her last husband is Arthur Byrd. Ralph Burgerdorfer was killed in a knfe fight that he was trying to stop on 31 Oct 1932. Arthur died about six months after Sophia. Arthur liked to chew tobacco and would take my dad on walks with him, because Sophia did not like it in the house. Rest in peace Great grandma Sophia.
