Marvin Jay Winkler, son of George Andrew and Minnie Mary Smith Winkler, was born February 12, 1932, in Springfield, Missouri. He departed this life Sunday, August 18, 2002, in his home, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of seventy years, six months, and six days.

On May 13, 1983, he was united in marriage to Helen Louise McFarland Brackett, and together they shared the last nineteen years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Roger LaWayne Winkler; and four brothers, Ralph, Floyd, Gary, and an infant, Dean Winkler.

Marvin is survived by his loving wife, Helen, of the home; three sons, Gregory Winkler, of Bakersfield, California, Scott Brackett, and his wife, Shelly, of Lebanon, Missouri, and Tom Brackett, and his wife, Mary, of Belton, Missouri; two daughters, Connie Woods, and her husband, Tom, of Bakersfield, California, and Susanne Neal, and her husband, Tim, of Lebanon, Missouri; ten grandchildren, Lora Geis, Jamie Winkler, Renee Woods, Clint Winkler, Erick Neal, Jessica Neal, Caleb Brackett, Danielle Wice, Paul Wice, and Peter Wice; one great-granddaughter, Nicole Geis; two brothers, Neil Winkler, and his wife, Mary, of Lebanon, Missouri, and Wesley Winkler, of Falcon, Missouri; three sisters, Pat Fenwick, and her husband, Clyde, of Springfield, Missouri, Gayle Winkler, of Lebanon, Missouri, and Gloria Canfield, of Falcon, Missouri; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Leslie and Phyllis McFarland, of Lebanon, Missouri; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

He was born in Springfield, Missouri, and was raised in Gregory County, South Dakota. When Marvin was in ninth grade, the family moved back to Missouri and made their home in Bolivar, where Marvin graduated from Bolivar High School in the Class of 1951. He soon moved to Bakersfield, California where he made his home for many years, and was employed as a salesman for Hopper, Inc. until retiring. He then moved back to Missouri and purchased a cattle farm near Lebanon, and did welding, designing and building of items to compliment his farm. He personally designed and built the Winkler cattle lift. He also worked as a salesman for the National Life and Accident Insurance Company, which became American General Insurance for several years. In 1996, he and Helen sold the farm and moved into Lebanon.
Marvin followed the Baptist faith throughout his life and attended the Second Freewill Baptist Church in Lebanon.
Whatever Marvin did he strove to do to the best of his abilities and had many top salesmanship awards to prove it. In his spare time he enjoyed being outdoors where his favorite activities included hunting and fishing. He and Helen enjoyed traveling and had done so extensively around the world. He and Helen liked entertaining people in their home and Marvin particularly enjoyed playing the card game Pitch. His family was very important to him and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

Marvin was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle, and was a caring neighbor and friend. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Services will be held August 21, 2002 at 1:30p.m. in the Second Freewill Baptist Church under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Lebanon, Missouri. Burial will follow in the McBride Cemetery, near Competition, Missouri.Visitation will be held Tuesday August 20, 2002 in the funeral home.
