Verna Abegglen Karren
Verna Lousie Abegglen Karren passed away Jan. 3, 2008 at the Uintah Care Center in Vernal.
She was born Jan. 27, 1912 in Fort McCloud, Alberta, Canada, to Lawrence Ulrich Abegglen and Edlean Emily Clark Abegglen. She married Lawrence Edward Karren April 7, 1933 (solomized in the Salt Lake Temple January 1956). She was the mother of four children, Gladys Joan Karren Weeks Gray Lind (deceased), Scherry Della Karren Hatch, Dixie Lee Karren Horrocks and David Michael Karren. She was a grandmother to 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one and a half great-great-grandchildren.
Fond memories of her childhood were spent growing up in Lapoint. She had a great love for her parents and always talked about what great examples they were. Verna mentioned often how no one was a stranger in their home, the door was always open and everyone felt welcome. She loved to tell stories of adventures in Lapoint with her brothers and sisters.
Verna had many talents. She loved to grow flowers and vegetables, play the piano, knit, crochet, make dresses and enjoy her family. Among her accomplishments, after the death of her husband in 1954, she made a living by sewing for the community and caring for senior citizens in her home. Later she built a motel, eventually converting it into a care center. Verna served in many LDS church callings and loved to go to the temple.
Verna is preceded in death by five sisters, Lena Mast, Alice Mott, Gladys Soderquist, Gwen Abegglen and Edlean (Birdie) Abegglen; three brothers, Larry Abegglen, Lewis Abegglen and Bill Abegglen; one daughter, Gladys Joan Karren Weeks Gray Lind; two grandchildren, Cory Hatch, Michelle Hatch.
She is survived by sister, Katherine Hauptfleisch; brother, Clarke (Boy) Abegglen; three children, Scherry Della Karren and husband Gary N. "Red" Hatch, Dixie Lee Karren Horrocks, David Michael Karren and wife Joyce Karren; 16 grandchildren, Polly Putnam, Christine Avilla, Paul Weeks, Sidney Decarlo, Lincoln Hatch, Tren Horrocks, Cobi Horrocks, Page Cluff, Kimberly Gee, Becky Schliesser, Joshua Karren, Sarah Karren, Jonathan Karren and Christian Karren; 26 great-grandchildren, and one and a half great-great-grandchildren.
