Services for Bill Griffith Barr, 82, Lawrence, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church. Private family inurnment will be in Pioneer Cemetery.

Mr. Barr died Monday, March 20, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Sept. 19, 1923, in Birmingham, Ala., the son of Archie and Mabel Griffith Barr. He graduated from Ensley High School in Birmingham in 1942. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1948 and received a master's degree from Kansas University in 1961.

Mr. Barr served in the U.S. Navy as a fighter pilot during World War II and survived the bombing of the USS Franklin aircraft carrier. He also served in the U.S. Naval Reserve in Olathe for 20 years.

He was a professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Space Technology Center at KU for 15 years. He worked for Procter & Gamble from 1948 to 1962.

Mr. Barr served as director of the low-income housing authority in Lawrence in the late 1960s and early 1970s and served on the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon, and was active in the Boy Scouts of America as a Scoutmaster. He also was a member of Military Officers Association of America and American Society of Mechanical Engineers, serving as vice president of Region 7, and was director of CRES.

He married Martha L. Bell on April 28, 1945, in Birmingham. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a son, William G., Omaha, Neb.; two daughters, Patricia Barr Clarke, Denver, and Deborah Barr, Wilmington, Del.; five brothers, Archie, Jack and Clifford, all of Birmingham, James, Fort Worth, Texas, and Kenneth, Sarasota, Fla.; a sister, Ann Barr Friday, Birmingham; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
