Dr Pramod Karan Sethi
Birth: Nov. 28, 1927
Death: Jan. 6, 2008

Scientist, noted Indian orthopedic surgeon. He is best remembered for helping develop the prosthetic artificial limb known as the "Jaipur Foot." The foot is named for the village of Jaipur, India, and is made of rubber and wood, making it probably the cheapest limb available in the world today. The limb, invented in 1969 by a team of surgeons including Sethi, has been used for soldiers who have fought against terrorism in Afghanistan including the 1999 Kargi War, and for other amputees worldwide. For his contributions in the development of the foot Dr. Sethi has been recognized by Time Magazine, the Guinness Book of World Records, has been awarded the Padma Shri Award and the Magsaysay Award. He died form a heart attack in Jaipur, India. (bio by: K)
