|Birth: ||Aug. 18, 1831|
|Death: ||Mar. 4, 1874|
Eldest daughter of Judge Stephen T. Logan. In 1861, she married Milton Hay. Two children survived from this marriage, Kate and Logan Hay.
Mary died at the age of 43 of childbed fever. Her child, Milton Hay, Jr;, was stillborn that same day.
The funeral services of the late Mrs. Milton Hay were held yesterday afternoon at her husband's residence. Tears stood in all eyes as the pastor alluded to her loving nature and kind acts, and it was evident that true and deep feeling had called together, the great concourse of people who crowded the spacious house, and a considerable portion of the grounds. The coffin was a superb casket of the most graceful form and exquisite workmanship. Flowers in profusion were arranged upon the table by which the clergyman stood; upon the coffin they were combined in the forms of the cross and crown.
One of the most touching events of the sorrowful occasion, was the bearing of a tiny, wreath-decked coffin after the one in which the loved remains of the mother were carried to the hearse. More wide-spread and heartfelt sorrow has seldom been felt and manifested in this city at the death of any person in private life.
Both braches of the General Assembly had adjourned to afford members an opportunity to attend, and all classes of our inhabitants were also represented in the attendants upon this last solemn ceremonial whereby the living bid farewell to the dead. IL State Journal, Springfield, IL 3-7-1874
