Colonel James Hall Brooks, (United States Army, retired), of Charlottesville, Virginia, died Monday, December 30, 2007, at Hospice of the Piedmont after a long illness.
A resident of Albemarle County, Virginia, since 1978, Brooks was born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1916, the younger son of Henry Candler Brooks and Clara Hall Brooks.
After graduating from Harvard College in 1938, Brooks attended Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (1939), Yale Law School (1939-1941), and New York University Law School (1942-43). In World War II, Brooks was drafted in 1941 and served in the United States Army until 1946 when he separated in grade of Major. He joined the United States Army Reserve in 1946 and served continuously for 28 years until he retired in 1974. During these years, he was graduated from the United States Army Transportation School, the Command and General Staff College, the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and the United States Army Logistics Management Center. He was promoted to Colonel in 1969, designated a Logistician in 1970 and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 1974. Admitted to the New York Bar in 1946, Brooks was a practicing attorney before joining J. P. Morgan & Co. in 1951. When that firm merged with Guaranty Trust Company of New York in 1959, Brooks served with Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York until retirement in 1976. Brooks was a member of the American Bar Association, the legal fraternity of Phi Delta Phi, and the Military Officers Association of America. He was a former member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the Harvard Club of New York City and the Army and Navy Club in Washington D.C.
His survivors include his wife, the former Cornelia Prouty McMurray, whom he married in 1948; their daughter, Emily Brooks Trier of Shaker Heights, Ohio; their son, Candler Prouty Brooks of Reston, Virginia; and six grandchildren, Malcolm, Henry, Daniel and Cornelia Trier and James and John Brooks.
The family will greet friends 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday, January 6, 2008, at the Hill and Wood Funeral Room, 201 N. First Street, Charlottesville, VA.
A graveside funeral service, with full military honors, will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at Arlington National Cemetery.
