Sarah Ann was the daughter of William and Esther (Whitehead) McCarty. Her grandparents were James and Sarah (Wood) Whitehead.
She had one brother, Flavious Josephus McCarty.
Sarah married Spangler Gipe on February 16, 1870 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. They had three sons, Charles, Georgie and Harry Gipe.
Sarah A. Gipe
Mrs. Sarah Ann Gipe, widow of Spangler R. Gipe, died at 4:30 yesterday morning at the family residence, 1821 Jackson Street, after a week's illness. Her death was caused by typhoid pneumonia. Her husband died three weeks ago. Mrs. Gipe was a daughter of William and Esther McCarty and was born in this county on Dec. 15, 1849. She and her husband lived on a farm east of the city until eight years ago, when her husband retired from active life and moved to the city. Mrs. Gipe is survived by one son, Harry Gipe, and one brother, F. J. McCarty, of West Lafayette. Mrs. Gipe was a member of the Presbyterian church of Dayton and was a woman of noble character. She was famous for her hospitality and had a large circle of friends. The funeral will be conducted from the residence tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock. Rev. Grant Teeters will officiate and the interment will be made in the Dayton Cemetery.
