Willis Conover
Birth: Dec. 18, 1920
Death: May 17, 1996

Music Producer, Broadcaster. Born in Buffalo, New York, for over forty years he was known as the Voice of America. As a Disk Jockey, he began broadcasting in 1955, in Washington, D.C., with the “Voice of America Jazz Hour". Gaining International popularity, he became a symbol of hope at the peak of the cold war with an estimated 30 million listeners in Eastern Europe, Soviet Union and as many as 100 million others worldwide. As a producer, he fronted jazz concerts at the White House, the Newport Jazz Festival, for movies, television and was chairman of the jazz panel of the National Endowment for the Arts. He died of cancer at age 75 in Alexandria, Virginia. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
