In the Indian War of 1836-39, Mr. Bourn served in the militia in two different enlistments, one of which was Capt James A Sweat's company of the Ware Co Militia from June 9 to August 19, 1837. The next year he was elected major of the 158th Battalion, GA militia, and commissioned Sept 2, 1839, a position which he filled for several years. Mr. Bourn was three times elected sheriff of Ware Co., serving 1838-1840, 1842-1844, and in 1858, resigning during his last term, and moving to Jacksonville FL. He was also Justice of the Inferior Court of Ware County in 1844-45, serving an unexpired term. He lived in Jacksonville until 1870 when he moved back to Ware Co where he died August 18, 1886. While in Jacksonville, he lost his wife and two of his sons in a cholera epidemic in 1864. He married Miss Lydia Crews Feb 3, 1867 in Jacksonville but had no children by her.

Volunteered in the Confederate Army and became a colonel of a Florida regiment and served in Virginia.
