Monsignor Luigi Locati, Bishop of the Titular See of Zica, and Apostolic Vicar of Isiolo, Kenya, was born in Vinzaglio, within the Archdiocese of Vercelli, Italy, and was ordained to the Priesthood at 23 years of age, on June 29, 1952.
A life long Missionary in Kenya, he served for over thirty years as a Parish Priest in Isiolo, which at the time, formed part under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Meru.
When Pope John Paul II, named Isiolo an Apostolic Vicariate on December 15, 1995, Luigi Locati was named as its First Apostolic Vicar.
Locati received his Episcopal Consecration with the Titular See of Zica, at the age of 67, on February 4, 1996, from Cardinals Jozef Tomko and Tarcisio Bertone SDB., assisted by Bishop Silas Silvius Njiru.
On Thursday, July 14, 2005, around 9 pm., nine days short of his 77th Birthday, Bishop Locati was gunned down while walking with a guard to his residence. Having been hit with two bullets in his head, Msgr. Luigi died almost instantly. Two Priests, Cyril Mukuchia and Peter Malley Guyo Wako were arrested in connection to his murder.
Kenya's President, Mwai Kibaki, joined hundreds of mourners at the Bishop's Funeral, which was held at Isiolo's Cathedral on July 20, 2005.
