Alice was the sixth child of Thomas Merrill Johnson and Hattie Ellen Duggan. After her parents' divorce, she went with her mother and other siblings from Illinois to Montana, where mother Hattie met and married Frederick Newell Golden. The family moved to Spokane, Washington. Alice left home at a young age and found work cooking for a nearby riverboat crew in Washington state.

Alice married Wildie Herbert "Bill" Keen on 25 June 1912 in Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai, Idaho. They had three daughters: Elsie "Marguerite", Esther "Kathleen", and Alice "Dorothea". Alice and Bill also had six grandchildren.

Alice loved gardening and always had a beautiful flower garden, winning several awards for her arrangements; she was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution; she loved sewing and making dolls for her granddaughters, and playing Scrabble with her grandchildren. She was an excellent seamstress and supplemented the family income by sewing wedding dresses.
