After graduating from South Philadelphia High School he went to Villanova where he became an All-American. He was taken by the Cleveland Browns in the 2nd round of the 1950 NFL draft in a choice acquired from Detroit for the rights to halfback Doak Walker, who was drafted by the Browns in 1949. He played six seasons with the Browns as offensive and defensive tackle from 1950 through 1955. The Browns were in the NFL Championship Game all six years he was with them. He finished his seven-season playing career with Green Bay in 1956. He was tagged with the nickname "Spanky McFarland." He was a longtime NFL assistant coach (with the Colts, Eagles, and Dolphins) and head coach of the Baltimore Colts in 1972. He retired from pro coaching in 1994. John Thomas Sandusky died from complications from internal bleeding while hospitalized. (bio by: Mel Bashore)
