JOHN COOK CHEATS :, GALLOWS BY HANGING HIMSELF IN PRISON
FOUND STRANGLED TO DEATH IN HOSPITAL CELL WHEN JAILER MADE HIS FIRST MORNING ROUND . HANDKERCHIEF AND TOWEL WERE , UTILIZED Aged Murderer of Mrs . Edna McLennan Had Seen Downhearted for Several Days—Was Second Attempt at Self-Destruction Since Crime . JAILER BOYD FINDS BODY Prisoner Thought to Have Committed Suicide Before Midnight—Body Was Rigid When Discovered . John Cook , nged murderer of Mrs . Edna McLennan , whose atrocious crime of discharging the contents of a double-barreled shot-gun into the fcaclc of his victim on a farm south of this city , appalled the entire community -will never answer for the deed to 1 * 5 state of Illinois . •_ . Cook committed suicide Wednesday night by hanging himself to a water pipe In the hospital cell at the . county jail . Jailer Makes Discovery . Jailer-Al . Boyd discovered the body at 5 : 30 oclock this ( Thursday ) morning , while . making his first round of the prison . He immediately notified Sheriff Peters , and after Dr . W . F . Burros had been summoned , the three cut the . ghastly form down . . The body was rigid whenfound , showing that Cook had been dead for many hours . The face of the dead man had turned purple from strangulation , and the lolling 1 tongue and star- : ring eyes of the gray-haired corpse made the sight a ghastly one , in the approaching light . of morning . . Used Towel and Handkerchief . , It Js evident that Cook deliberately planned to kill himself the day before , for he had neglected no detail to make : the work complete . , • He had first knotted his handker-i chief tightly around his neck , and , then had tied a towel securely . to the handkerchief . After mounting a lavatory and securing the free end of the towel to a water pipe running along the ceiling , it only remained for him to jump and cheat the , penitentiary , or the insane asylum , or perhaps the gallows . Was Second Attempt . It will be remembered that Cook . attempted suicide by shooting with a rifle Immediately after the murder . His wound had healed , but the pressure of the noose upon his throat ¦ Wednesday night tore open the bullet hole , and the body was stained • with blood when cut down . • , The bullet had entered his throat on the left side and issued at a point near the temple . Complained of Feeling Unwell . Cook had been feeling blub for several days and of late had complained that he was ill . .- Jailer Boyd visited the old man in his cell at 10 : 30 o clock Wednesday night , and saw nothing to arouse his suspicions . Cook was lying on his TiiinV nnTinrfint . lv nfllefiTi .. and the turn-
key did not disturb him . It is now thought that the crafty old assassin was fully awake and was waiting for the jailer to finish his last round before retiring , so that there would be no danger of interruption in the grewsome proceedings . Would Cook Have Hung ? Did Cook save the county the expense of hanging him by his desperate deed ? There is a doubt as to this in the minds nt the states attorney and his assistants , for while a case of wilful and deliberate murder could have easily been proven , the defendants advanced ago would probably have not permitted the death penalty . Would he have been declared insane ? It is Improbable , for the sheriff , his deputies and the jailer , who have been in constant touch with Cook since his incarceration , are unable to say that they have noticed a single word or action on the prisoners part , to cause them to doubt his sanity . ^ Still there is no telling what a jury may do , and the sheriff s force is considerably relieved , as they feared a possible hanging might be In store for them . Suicide Proof of Guilt . Cook told many conflicting stories in . regard to the murder after he had been locked up , and these would probably have been used against him had his case come to trial . While there are none who doubted his . guilt , his suicide Is accepted as conclusive r . roof that be murdered Mrs . McLennan in cold blood . fi Cook had talked of the crime but little since his imprisonment , but the lust statement be made was to the effect that Mrs . McLennan had first shot him ; and that he accidentally shot her In falling . Also that he did not know she was shot until the day following the crime . 1 On the night of the shooting he told Dr . Burres , who was dressing his wound , that he knew Mrs . McLennan had been shot and that he knew she was dead . Several stories varying in small detail were told , but will never be usedagainst the old man , who has now paid the penalty for his crime . I Never Meant to Kill Her .
