US Congressman. He taught school until enlisting for the Civil War in 1861. Wheeler joined the 10th Michigan Infantry in 1861, was promoted to Second Lieutenant in June 1862, First Lieutenant in April 1863, and Captain in April 1865, was wounded three times, and lost the use of his left arm. After the war he moved to Bay City, where he was elected Bay County Clerk in 1866, and served in several offices in the Village of Wenona, including Trustee, Clerk and President. He also studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1868. In 1870 Wheeler was elected to the Michigan Senate and served two terms. In 1873 he moved to Ludington, and in 1874 he was appointed Judge of the Circuit Court, sitting on the bench until his 1878 resignation. He was Ludington's Postmaster from 1878 to 1882. In 1890 Wheeler was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat and served one term, 1891 to 1893. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1892, and in 1894 was appointed US Pension Agent for Michigan, an office he held until his death. (bio by: Bill McKern)
