UNION CIVIL WAR SOLDIER. SERVED IN CO. M, 2ND REGT. NEW JERSEY VOL.

~
Born either in New York or New Jersey (various censuses report both but New Jersey more often), the son of an Irish-born father and New Jersey-born mother, in 1860 he apparently was living in or near Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and possibly in Chester County, although he is not found with certainty in that census.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted in Lancaster County November 6, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 11 as a musician with Co. B, 178th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 27, 1863.
2. Enlisted August 11, 1863, and mustered into federal service at Camp Parker, Trenton, New Jersey, September 21 as a private with Co. M, 2nd New Jersey Cavalry. He was promoted to corporal September 1, 1864, reduced to ranks March 1, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company November 1, 1865, at Vicksburg, Mississippi.

He married Mary Elizabeth lnu. and fathered Samantha (b. @1868), John (b. @1869), Lewis (b. @1872), Catherine (b. 10/??/74), George (b. @1877), Margaret (b. 02/??/85), and Arthur (b. 07/??/93). The birth year shown above is subject to debate.
