After attending Harvard College and serving in the Navy during World War I, Mr. Akin started work at Laciede Steel Co. in 1919. He was elected a director in 1936 became president-treasurer in 1945 and chairman of the board in 1966. In December 1967, he retired from active management of the company but continued as a director and honorary chairman of the board until his death. Mr. Akin was on the board of trustees of Washington University for 18 years and was past chairman of the board. In 1953 he received an honorary doctor of engineering degree from the University of Missouri at Rolls for service to the steel industry and to the university. He also was a director of St. Louis Union Trust Co., the St. Louis Regional Industrial Development Council, Illinois Terminal Railroad and the Alton Illinois Manufacturers Association.
