William Logan

US Senator. Born in Logan's Fort near St. Asaphs Creek at Harrodsburg, Kentucky, he was the son of General Benjamin Logan. He spent much of his childhood at the fort and later moved to Shelby County, Kentucky to study law. Logan was admitted to the bar and practiced as an attorney in Shelby County. He was a delegate to the Kentucky Constitutional Convention in 1799. In 1803, he was elected to the Kentucky General Assembly and served as Speaker of the House from 1804 to 1806. He was appointed as Judge for the Kentucky Court of Appeals in 1808 and resigned after a short time to accept election to another term in the General Assembly. In 1810, he was appointed to the same judicial position again and presided as Judge until 1812. He was also a Presidential Elector in 1808, 1812, and 1816. Elected in 1818 to represent Kentucky in the United States Senate, he served from 1819 until his resignation on May 28, 1820 to become a candidate for the office of Governor of Kentucky. After losing the election, he was appointed as Commissioner of the Kentucky River Company until he returned to the Kentucky Legislature in 1821. He died at his residence in Shelby County when he was 45 years old. (bio by: K Guy)
