County Superintendent, William Asbury Luce, son of William and Sarah (Burns) Luce, was one of a family of ten children. His father, three sisters and two brothers still survive him. He was born in Marion county, June 10, 1853. He located in Huntington county in 1874, where he taught school for four years. He then came to Liberty Township, this county, where he taught school continually for nine years, during which time he successfully conducted two terms of normal school in Liberty Center. He began his profession of teaching when but sixteen years of age and was eminently qualified for his chosen profession. in 1887 he was elected to the office of superintendent of the schools of Wells County. His fitness for the position was shown from the fact that in 1889 he was re-elected without opposition. In his short life he had taught nearly forty terms of school. He was united in marriage with Anna Merriman Dec. 14, 1879. He departed this life Jan. 30, 1891, at Cincinnati, aged 37 years, 7 months and 20 days, leaving a wife and one son to mourn their loss. Prof. Luce had been a member of the Christian Church for a number of years and left to the living the evidence that he had gone to rest. He was a member of the Odd Fellows' lodge of Bluffton, which assisted in his funeral service. The funeral took place at the First Baptist Church of Liberty Center, Feb. 1st, 1891. Sermon was preached by Rev. C.S. Winans, pastor of the church, from a part of Phil. 1:21. The esteem in which he was held may be seen from the fact that it was one of the largest funerals ever witnessed in this part of the county. Prof. Luce is gone, but the moral forces set in motion by his busy life will live when his name if forgotten among men. Charles S. Winans.
